Quick File
The 31 October 2010 Self Assessment paper-filing deadline has now passed, therefore any outstanding 2009/10 returns must now be completed online.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is urging anyone needing to complete their tax return online for the first time to get registered now, in good time before the 31 January deadline.

If you're completing your tax return for the first time online, the first step you need to take is to register for online filing at www.hmrc.gov.uk/online. HMRC will immediately issue you with a User ID, an Activation Code will also be posted out to you in around seven days, you will need to input this in order to activate your account. Once activated you can then complete your tax return online.

It's very important that you register as soon as possible. It can take up to seven working days for you to receive your Activation Code - that's why HMRC is urging people to register in December and early January, in order to avoid a last-minute rush in late January.

If you need any help or advice on completing your return, go to the the HMRC website or call the Self Assessment helpline on 0845 9000 444.
