Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax and Self Assessment (ITSA) is coming in April 2026 for sole traders and landlords. You can find out more here.
You will be able to voluntarily join the MTD ITSA programme from April 2025. Here’s what you will need:
Before you access the MTD ITSA functionality in QuickFile you must first enroll your business on the MTD ITSA programme with HMRC. Please use the following links to find out more about enrollment and to start the process:
Once you have enrolled on the MTD ITSA pilot programme with HMRC, you are now ready to link your tax account to QuickFile. First head over to the HMRC Connect area in your account, you will find this under the “Reports” menu, then “HMRC”.
You can then click the “Connect” button to link a new tax account. Select the option “Individual account”.
You may first need to activate the MTD module on your QuickFile account, if you are presented with the message below, select the option “Join the pilot programme”. You will then be able to send a request to join the programme.
Once you have received confirmation that the MTD ITSA module has been enabled on your account you can repeat the process to connect a tax account and you should see a simple form to enter your business name and National Insurance (NI) number.
You will then be redirected to HMRC to grant approval for QuickFile to access and update your self assessment information. When you return back to the HMRC Connect screen in QuickFile you should now see your tax account listed and option to view details about your account.
Within the tax account detail screen you should see your MTD enabled business listed. You can click the “Workflow” link to view a summary of your current tax year and what’s outstanding.
OK so you’re now on the MTD ITSA programme and you’ve connected your HMRC account to QuickFile. A good place to start exploring the self-assessment functionality in QuickFile is the Workflow page, this is the hub for all things self-assessment and allows you to reach all the different areas for reviewing and completing your self-assessment obligations.

You can file a cumulative update to HMRC whenever you like, although as a minimum an update must be sent once per quarter.
