Please Note: You must first independently enrol your business for Making Tax Digital before proceeding with these steps. You can enrol for MTD within your HMRC Business Tax Account.
With the roll-out of HMRC’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) Service, there’s now a new way to connect your QuickFile account to HMRC so that you can file your MTD tax information.
From the top menu, select “Reports” followed by “HMRC”.
You should then see a button “Connect a new Tax Account”, go ahead and click this button:
You will be prompted to add a name for this account and to specify if the account belongs to an organisation or individual. For VAT filings you will need to select “Organisation account”.
Click the “Continue” button and you will be directed to the HMRC authentication page.
Log into the Tax Account you would like to link to your QuickFile account and confirm the link on the HMRC authentication pages. This account should have access to the relevant HMRC services you wish to use in QuickFile, for example, if you’re using QuickFile for MTD VAT returns, your HMRC account needs to be able to access this service.
You will then be redirected back to the HMRC Connect page in QuickFile and your Tax Account should now be visible.
If you now open your VAT settings within your QuickFile account you can see the option of selecting a HMRC Account for electronic filing, from the drop down, select the HMRC Account you wish to use and then save
Once you’ve linked your Tax Account you should see it on the HMRC Connect screen. We’ll try to communicate with HMRC using your authorised tax account and we’ll show the status under the “Status” column. If it shows as “Good” it means we can read information about your VAT obligations from HMRC. If the status shows as “Failed” you may need to reconnect your account and ensure your VAT registration number has been correctly entered.
When the “VAT Link” tick is green it means that this account is linked to your VAT settings (Report >> VAT Returns >> VAT Settings) for the purpose of VAT filing. If you have more than one Tax Account saved you can switch the live VAT account by clicking on the tick icons under this column.
If you get an error here it means that we have been unable to retrieve information from your Tax Account. This can be due to one of the following reasons.
- You have not yet enrolled for MTD within your HMRC Tax Account
- The VAT number saved in QuickFile is incorrect
- You have connected the wrong HMRC Tax Account
Please note: Once you have enrolled on the HMRC MTD for VAT, you will no longer be able to file your returns using the old method.
In your VAT Settings area ensure the boxes “Enable Online Filing” and “Use MTD Features” are checked and the correct HMRC account is linked below in the drop down.
Once you have done this you can proceed to file a VAT return. If the MTD features are correctly setup you should see a box prompting you to select the appropriate filing period when you go to Reports > HMRC
You can also see or switch the Tax Account that is linked for VAT filing on the HMRC Connect screen in QuickFile.
You can then prepare, preview and file your return.
